My new vanity table

You may remember that I have been wanting a vanity table for our bedroom, feeling a little worried that it's too tidy to contain one. But with just one bathroom and a teenage that probably is going to live there soon, it's not just vanity to have one, but practical to be able to move out my makeup and hair stuff to the bedroom.


I started to look around, but then I asked a colleague of mine if he didn't happen to have a vanity table that he didn't need. This may sound like a strange question to ask a work mate, especially a man in his sixties, but really, not so odd at all. You see, this man is as keen as I am on vintage things and has been long before it was anything trendy. He lives in an 18th century house at Djurgården i Stockholm. now everyone who knows anything about Stockholm will say "Oooooh, how does he manage to get a place to live there." I'm not sure, but it is a lovely house and I doubt that there are any furniture less than 50 years old. So I wasn't completely surprised when he immediately said; "Oh yes, a green one imported from San Francisco in 1946. Do you want it?"

Last Friday we went to look at it and found that the vanity was in a very nice condition and the size is perfect. The only think missing is the glass top, but that is something I can fix. It's kidney-shaped and has clearly been green all along and don't have a mirror. I don't really know why someone took the trouble to take it from USA to Sweden as it isn't very fancy, but the original owner was wealthy and a bit eccentric, so possible she didn't see transporting the table this far as an obstacle. My lovely work mate also gifted me with the table, though I had planned to buy it.



Cute, yes? You can also see out new walls- the wall-paper is a re-print of a 30's paper. We fell in love with it but it was also really expensive, so our solution was to only paper one wall and paint the other ones in a matching colour. We are still on the look-out for a nice green fabric for curtains and bedspread, so it's not completely finished yet. Funnily enough we had decided on green long before I knew of the vanity table. Some things are just meant to be, don't you think? The vanity itself needs a mirror- my darling recalls a mirror with lamps that belonged to his grandmother. Possibly it is still with his sister or brother, so he will ask. If so it will suit perfectly.



I also need to make a skirt to the table. I have a lot more makeup that I can cram into the one drawer, do I need to get stackable boxes that can stand under the table. Which I don't want to show, of course. New Vintage Lady has made a very nice one. I have some purple fabric that is a couples of shades darker than the walls, which may work. I thin kit's enough fabric to make a pillow or too for the bed, which I think would look nice on a green bedspread.
