Blue hat, red sweater

In the bottom of a box filled with hat supplies I inherited from my grandmother I found a blue hat. At first glance it looked a complete wreck, badly smashed up and very dusty, which is no wonder as it has probably been there for 50 years or more. On closer examination I found that it was in pretty good shape, despite it looks, so I decided to try to renovate it.

Before

Inside

It was bought at "Hatthuset" (The House of Hats) in Stockholm and as my grandmother moved to the capital in 1938 or 39, I think the hat is from around 1940, give or take a year or two.

De-dusted, steamed and left to regain it's shape on a hat block. It's made of felt and is only decorated with a bow in grosgrain ribbon.

From behind

And on my head. Now, the hat may be younger than my estimate, but the round flat shape really feels like it belong in the time period of the late 30's, early 40's. What do you think?

Anyway, it really shaped up nicely and is in such good shape that it can be worn. I feel like I have got a gift from my grandmother. The sweater is the red reproduction jumper I have been looking at from Rocket Originals. I was a bit hesitant as it wool/acrylic blend, but it doesn't feel acrylic at the touch and is very comfy. I'm ever so pleased!

To finish, a little hair trick. If I want hair that waves nicely, as my hair does on the pictures, then I roll the front of my hair forwards in standing pin curls. I use a mascara wand to roll around and I have found that it works well to sleep on them. When I brush them out I part the hair where I want and after brushing and forming the hair into waves I place a couple of duckbill clips to enforce the wave and hair spray a little. For me it works much better than finger waves or flat pin curls as they tend to be too flat for my face. The back is just ordinary pin curls, I have pinned them up to make the hair look shorter.

Cuddly Lipton-shot. He is settling in just fine though he definitely want to be in the same room as we are.

I love that hat! My mom has one almost exactly like it that she found in an antique shop in the 80s...except on hers, the brim tilts downward, and there's a label inside that reads "Margaret O'Brien, Cinderella MGM".

Miss Virginia: How lovely!

Hannah and Lina Sofia: Thank you! I have never dared to combine those colours before, but I'm very pleased with the result!

I'll probably buy another sweater from Rocker Originals. :)

Love the blue hat with the red sweater--so snappy! :) I definitely think 40s; if not very, very early 50s (little hats like that seem to show up a lot during that time in a lot of my old magazines). So pretty though!

Casey: Thank you! My Mum remembers the hat and she is born in 1946, so I think you are right. :)

OK - if you can fit into a sweater from Rocket originals I can too. If you look at their measurements they seem to narrow at the bust, but as said above: if your boobs can get into them mine can too. I guess that I have to buy one.

Eva: It's definitely not too snug! I laways buy smaller sizing in knitwear, as I want them fitted.
